About James

I have been diving for a decade. During this time I have learned an incredible amount from the instructors I have had, textbooks, diving, and peers. All of this experience and knowledge is brought into my classes. I have been an instructor the majority of my diving career, and hold instructor ratings through multiple agencies. I have been fortunate enough to take classes from many different instructors, and certifying agencies including: RAID, NAUI, PADI, TDI, NSS-CDS and others. I have spent my teaching career improving my skills and instruction, and I know I’m not done yet.

I have done many incredible things in my life, but technical scuba diving has been the most gratifying yet. My professional training and education allow me to look at scuba from multiple aspects. It’s not all about being a dive jock, but also using your brain to solve complex challenges.

When I’m not diving, and sometimes when I am, I enjoy spending time with my family. They are the reason I take diving as seriously as I do. I know that above all else I will come home to my family every time.

Why Technical Diving?

My profession as an engineer primarily boils down to one aspect, mitigating risk. I approach SCUBA classes the same way. Through planning, training, and experience; students can mitigate the risks in diving. Each level of diving has skills you must perform, but those skills don’t do you any good if you don’t understand why they are important. This is an area that needs great improvement in the SCUBA industry. I have understanding, and experience in situations using the defined skills that allow me to intelligently speak to why things are done the way that they are, and why mastery of skills is so important.

As an instructor, James is professional and extremely knowledgeable. His thoroughness in building better divers shows every time James is in the water or even casually talking about diving.
It is my strong opinion that I wouldn’t be where I am today in my diving career without the guidance I received from James.

I knew that if I was going to move to tech diving I would want the most solid foundation possible. Even though it’s harder and there were times it felt impossible, training with James was the very best choice for me.
I’ve been lucky to have instructors that always taught well beyond requirements, forcing me to take training seriously and James is no exception. He teaches with a passion and dedication that you just have to admire and respect.
So do yourself and your family a favor and choose the quality and depth of technical dive training with James Bock – it’ll be tough but will make you into a much stronger, safer technical diver.

Excellent instructor. James is great about giving you the tips you need. So that you develop the skills required to dive at the technical level.

If you’re looking to pay the fee, run through a couple of dives and get your pre-approved stamped certification, this is not the class for you!

James is a top tier instructor; the class is a serious foundational introduction to tec diving and by the end of the course you will be a superior diver!

The jump for me from recreational level Divemaster (400+ dives) to Tec 40 student demanded a significantly higher level of focus, task loading, safety and real buoyancy.

Your skills will be sharpened.

James is a brilliant diver and a great instructor! He sets very high standards, but I’ve never learned so much or improved as a diver as I have under James’ training.

I took my trimix course with James a couple years ago and he is a very professional but yet fun scuba instructor. I would recommend him over all the rest!!!
